Pepper Schwartz to be keynote speaker at ‘Literary Voices’ dinner April 21

UW Sociology Professor and author Pepper Schwartz will deliver the keynote speech at Friends of the UW Libraries “Literary Voices,” a dinner where guests dine at tables with authors, at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the University of Washington Club.


Other authors hosting tables at the event include Greg Bear, Michael Biggins, Mark Jenkins, Laura Kastner, David Montgomery, Joel Migdal, Jeffrey Oschner, Nancy Pearl, Maya Sonenberg, Woodruff Sullivan III, Indu Sundaresan, Solveig Torvik, and David Wagoner.

Schwartz holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, where she was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and an master’s and doctorate in sociology from Yale University.


She wrote the monthly column “Sex and Health” for Glamour magazine, with coauthor Dr. Janet Lever, for more than seven years, and “Talking About Sex” for American Baby magazine for eight years. She also wrote a weekly column called “Sex.Net with Dr. Pepper” for Microsoft Corporation’s One Click Away. She currently writes columns for LifetimeTV.com, Classmates.com, and the magazines Lifetime and Classmates. She has contributed to many magazines, journals and newspapers including The New York Times, Sexual Health, Psychology Today and Contexts. She was a regular member of the KIRO-TV news staff for 12 years and appears regularly on national TV news, documentaries and other programs.


She has received many awards, including the Matrix Award for Achievement in Education and the International Women’s Forum Award in Career Achievement in Washington State. She is the author of 14 books, including popular books such as The Great Sex Weekend, The Lifetime Love and Sex Quiz Book, Everything You Know About Love and Sex is Wrong, Ten Talks Parents Must Have With Their Children About Sex and 201 Question to Ask Your Kids / Parents, among other titles.


The University Book Store will be at the event with authors’ books, which may be purchased and then signed by the authors. Literary Voices is made possible with support from University of Washington Press and the UW College of Arts and Sciences. Proceeds from the dinner will support University Libraries preservation, Libraries Research Awards for Undergraduates, and collection enhancement.
