Boucher to deliver Science in Medicine Lecture April 19
Richard Boucher, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will give the 2006-07 Annual Science in Medicine Lecture, Cystic Fibrosis: From Salt, to Gene, to Salt, from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in Hogness Auditorium, Health Sciences Building.
Boucher is the William Kenan Professor of Medicine and director of the Cystic Fibrosis/Pulmonary Research and Treatment Center. He is also co-director of the UNC Gene Therapy Center.
The Cystic Fibrosis Pulmonary Research and Treatment Center is a multidisciplinary group focused on the pathogenesis and therapy of cystic fibrosis and other lung diseases.
The cystic fibrosis gene controls salt and water transport across the cells lining the lung, pancreas, and other organs. When this gene is abnormal, secretions in these organs become dehydrated and sticky, and eventually clog airways and may block other organs (pancreas, intestines, male reproductive tract, bile ducts) as well.
The lecture will simulcast at Harborview Medical Center, Research and Training Building, Auditorium; VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Building 1, room 518; VA American Lake, Building 2, room 343; VA HSR&D at met Park (downtown Seattle); Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center.
