UW hosts reception for Medal of Honor recipients exhibit

News and Information

The University of Washington will host a reception tomorrow commemorating the opening of the “Visions of Valor” exhibit at Allen Library, which is a photo display of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.

The invitation-only reception will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Petersen Room of the Allen Library. The exhibit itself also will open tomorrow in the Allen Library. The exhibit is presented by TriWest Healthcare Alliance, which is the insurance carrier for the U.S. Armed Forces.

Three UW alumni who are Medal of Honor recipients will be at the reception:

  • Tommy Norris who was honored for his ground rescue of two downed pilots being held by the North Vietnamese;
  • Bruce Crandall, who led volunteers on a helicopter mission to effect a evacuation of wounded soldiers under relentless enemy fire during the Vietnam War.
  • John “Bud” Hawk, who blunted an enemy assault on a position near Chambois, France in 1944, running through a hail of bullets and shrapnel to direct fire that led to the destruction of two enemy tanks, with a third being driven off.

The UW is raising funds for a campus memorial that will honor all seven alumni recipients of the Medal of Honor. Thus far, $25,000 has been raised towards a $100,000 goal.
