UW presents diversity award to Alan Sugiyama

News and Information

The University of Washington will present its highest award for achievements on behalf of diversity to Alan Sugiyama, the founder and executive director of the Center for Career Alternatives.

The Charles E. Odegaard Award will be presented to Sugiyama at the 37th Annual Friends of the Educational Opportunity Program Celebration, sponsored by the UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity and the Friends of EOP, on May 8.

Sugiyama founded The Center for Career Alternatives in 1979. It has provided free education, training and employment services to over 15,000 youth and adults in King and Snohomish counties.

“Alan Sugiyama has been exemplary in providing leadership for and dedication to educational opportunity for culturally diverse populations in Seattle,” says Sheila Edwards Lange, interim vice president for minority affairs and vice provost for diversity.

The Odegaard Award was established in 1973 to honor an individual whose leadership sustains UW President Charles Odegaard’s work (1958-1973) on behalf of diversity at the University of Washington and the citizens of the state.
