Facilities Services packs ‘em in for big Meany meeting

A huge crowd gathered in Meany Hall on Tuesday, March 20, but it was no dance troupe or musical act. It was the first-ever departmentwide meeting of UW Facilities Services’ with about 800 of the department’s approximately 1,000 employees in attendance, convened by Charles Kennedy, associate vice president for Facilities Services.

Kennedy said the meeting, which featured comments by UW President Mark Emmert and Executive Vice President Weldon Irhig, was called, in part, to “acknowledge the work done on a campuswide basis and to express appreciation for work behind the scenes that allows the University to run.”

After remarks by Emmert and Ihrig, Kennedy and the directors of Facilities Services addressed the department’s strategies for the future. Kennedy stated that the department will use the “balanced scorecard” approach, which he said is “a framework that helps translate strategy into operational objectives that drives both behavior and performance.”

Kennedy said he intends the departmentwide meeting to become an annual event. For more information about Facilities Services and its work, visit online at http://www.washington.edu/admin/facserv/.
