Going green: Discussion of sustainable planning set for March 8

The College of Architecture and Urban Planning will present Civic and Green Infrastructure, a panel discussion highlighting sustainable planning and design in the Pacific Northwest and in Denmark, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in 120 Kane.

The event is part of an ongoing series titled “Global Green: Sustainable Planning and Design in the Pacific Northwest and Denmark.” The series seeks to bring attention to the similarities of these two regions and to draw out the environmental planning and design lessons that can be shared between them. The previous event in the series, a discussion of sustainable architecture in November, 2006, drew an overflow crowd at Kane Hall. Another event is planned for the spring to highlight alternative energy sources in the Pacific Northwest and Denmark.

Speakers and topics for the March 8 event include:

  • Bicycle Strategies and Solutions in Copenhagen, by Brian Hansen, Transport Planner for the City of Copenhagen, Denmark.

  • Turning Gray Space into Green Space: Integrating Stormwater with Urban Design, by Kevin Perry, Nevue Ngan Associates, Portland, Ore.

  • Visions for Seattle’s Green Infrastructure, by Nancy Rottle, UW Green Futures Research and Design Lab.

  • Landscape Dimensions of Seattle’s Olympic Sculpture Park, by Charles Anderson, Charles Anderson Landscape Architecture

Hilda Blanco, chair of the Department of Urban Design & Planning, will give opening remarks, and Steve Moddemeyer, from the City of Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development, will give an update on Seattle Green Factor and Implementation of Open Space Seattle 2100. Jerry Finrow, dean emeritus and professor of architecture, will be the moderator.
