Honey to speak again Feb. 23

For its eighth book talk, the UW Center for Multicultural Education will present Michael Honey, professor and historian of ethnic and labor studies in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Program at UW Tacoma, and author of the book Going Down Jericho Road: The Memphis Strike, King’s Last Campaign.

Honey will speak from from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in room 310 of the HUB. His talk, based on his book, will examine what was to be Dr. Martin Luther King’s final act of political struggle, on behalf of sanitation workers. .

Honey’s previous book, Black Workers Remember: An Oral History of Segregation, Unionism, and the Freedom Struggle, received the Southern Historical Association’s H.L. Mitchell Award for southern working-class history, the Southern Regional Council’s Lillian Smith award for a study of human rights issues in the South, and the Tacoma Public Library’s Murray Morgan Award for excellence by a Washington State writer.

Honey is currently helping to develop research-based learning among undergraduates through the Center for Labor Studies Tools for Transformation grant from the UW. In addition to writing and teaching, Honey regularly speaks on historical issues at various campuses and community organizations throughout the country, and consults with teachers and researchers developing labor, ethnic, and gender studies programs.
