McDermott memorial planned for Jan. 14
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 14, for Mark McDermott, a UW physicist who recently died.
McDermott joined the UW in 1962 after earning his doctorate at Columbia University. His research made a lasting contribution to the understanding of the distribution of charge and magnetism in medium to heavy nuclei.
McDermott served two terms as chair of the Physics Department (1984-1994), and in that position he oversaw the construction of the new Physics and Astronomy Building, which was completed on schedule and under budget. He helped create the Institute for Nuclear Theory and a northwest consortium to develop a fully instrumented beam line at Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source.
In addition to his academic roles, McDermott served as faculty representative to the state Legislature from 1981 to1983 and as vice-chair and chair of the Faculty Senate from 1996 to 1998.
