President Emmert gets ‘life-saving’ coaching
UW President Mark Emmert received a few lessons in emergency patient care from Dr. Brian Ross, executive director of the Institute for Surgical and Interventional Simulation (ISIS) in the UW School of Medicine, recently. Here, Ross instructs Emmert on how to induce anesthesia and intubate a patient, using a high fidelity computer-controlled mannequin, “Chris,” and then coaches the president on how to resuscitate the ISIS patient from cardiac arrest. ISIS is a state-of-the-art simulation center, leading the country in the use of simulation technologies to improve the quality of health care education and patient safety outcomes. The American College of Surgeons has certified ISIS as a Level I Comprehensive Education Institute. It is one of the first of eight simulation centers in the United States and Canada that have been considered for certification.
