Stem cell lecture set for Nov. 15
Dr. Martin Pera, director of the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, will present the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Seminar lecture. Pera’s lecture, Understanding, Maintaining, and Using Human Embryonic Stem Cells, will be from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Hogness Auditorium, Health Sciences Building.
Pera’s research interests include the cell biology of human pluripotent stem cells, early human development, and germ cell tumors. He was among a small number of researchers who pioneered the isolation and characterization of pluripotent stem cells from human germ cell tumors of the testis, work that provided an important framework for the development of human embryonic stem cells.
He has provided extensive advice to state, national and international regulatory authorities on the scientific background of human embryonic stem cell research. Pera is a member of the Steering Group of the International Stem Cell Initiative.
