Professional development proposals sought

The Learning for Leadership Council (LLC) is seeking proposals from graduate and professional students who have ideas for student-led projects that create opportunities for professional development and leadership experience.

Projects will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum funding per proposal is $3,000, which can support room rental, publication, publicity or honoraria (up to $500, including travel). Details are available at http://depts.washington.edu/gpssllc

The Learning for Leadership Council has received funding from the Office of the President and support from The Graduate School. A student-run council administers the allocation process.

LLC is now in the second year as a pilot program. One of the projects funded in the first year was a professional development lunch series created by the recently-founded Museology Student Committee for Professional Development. Their lunch series featured museum professionals discussing their latest projects.

“As students of a small but growing program we realize the importance of developing our unique voices and visions for the field,” said Rebecca Durkin, graduate student in museology and co-chair of the committee. “The experience of applying for a grant, establishing a student group and planning such a series, while balancing our course work, theses and job, has been challenging. In our field, where grant-writing skills are essential, our work with LLC is providing invaluable experience that will directly apply to our professional futures.”

In its first year, LLC funded 24 student projects.
