NYU prof to speak on Dead Sea Scrolls

Professor Lawrence Schiffman of New York University will deliver three public lectures on “The Religion of the Dead Sea Scrolls: Creation, Revelation and Redemption” as part of the Stroum lecture series. The lectures are:

• Oct. 17, 7:30 p.m. — God, Humanity and the Universe in the Dead Sea Scrolls. This lecture will be devoted to discussion of the basic theological beliefs of the Qumran sectarians regarding such questions as the nature of God, the creation of humanity, good and evil, and the place of humanity in the universe at large.
  
• Oct. 19, 7:30 p.m. — Scripture, Law and the Life of the Dead Sea Sect. This lecture investigates the sectarian attitude to divine revelation, authority of Scripture, Jewish law and its role in the life of the sect and in the wider Jewish community.
  
• Oct. 22, 3 p.m. — Apocalyptics, Messiahs and the End of Days. As the Dead Sea sect’s life was dedicated to preparation for the messianic era, this lecture discusses its brand of apocalyptic messianism, the nature of the messianic figures expected, resurrection, and the great war expected to usher in the end of days.

All lectures will be in the HUB Auditorium. They are free and open to the public.
