Ernst, Kim named Fialkow Scholars

Drs. Robert Ernst and Francis Kim have been named the Philip and Helen Fialkow Scholars for 2006. The award recognizes outstanding achievements by junior faculty in medicine in research, teaching, clinical work and academics. Ernst (allergy and infectious diseases) is a research assistant professor of medicine and principal investigator with the WWAMI Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research. Kim (cardiology) is an assistant professor of medicine at UW and Harborview Medical centers. His clinical work includes attending in the CCU service and cardiology clinic at Harborview. His research includes the study of the impairment of endothelial nitric oxide production in diabetes and obesity. The Fialkow Award, honoring the late UW dean of the School of Medicine and his wife, carries a $10,000 award for scholarly activities and a personal honorarium of $2,500.


Medical terminology classes coming

Harborview Medical Center Organization Development & Training is offering three new medical terminology classes, focusing on neurology, cardiology and orthopaedics. Participants will learn diagnostic, procedural, surgical, anatomic and medical terms, and how to read and understand medical reports. The courses are ideal for students, staff or anyone interested in the language of health care.

These half-day sessions take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon in October and from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in November. The classes are cardiology, Oct. 17 or Nov. 27; orthopaedics Oct. 30 or Nov. 30; and neurology, Nov. 6.

‘Salud!’ Film on Cuban health care

A special free screening of Salud!, a new documentary about the world-class health systems of Cuba, will be presented at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 30, in Hogness Auditorium, UW Health Sciences Center. Salud! explores the world of some 28,000 Cuban health professionals serving in 68 countries as well as the hearts and minds of international medical students in Cuba. Executive producer Dr. C. William Keck will be on hand for discussion after the screening.
