Seattle Public Library Site for New UW Medicine Lecture Series

UW Medicine is partnering with the Seattle Public Library to provide speakers and expert health care specialists for a new evening lecture series that takes monthly from September to November 2006, and from January to March 2007.This inaugural medical lecture series begins Sept. 6 and is free to the public. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month in the central downtown library’s Microsoft Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m. The library is located at 1000 Fourth Ave. and parking is available in the central library garage for $5.
UW Medicine faculty will address a variety of timely topics:
- Wednesday, Sept. 6: Targeting Breast Cancer with Vaccines, with Dr. Mary L. “Nora” Disis
Of women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, 30 percent will develop a recurrence within five years. Disis, professor of medicine, has identified tumor antigens or “markers” in breast and ovarian cancer patients. Disis and the UW Tumor Vaccine Group have developed a promising “vaccine” that may prevent the recurrence of cancers in select groups of women. She directs the UW Center for Translational Medicine in Women’s Health.
- Wednesday, Oct. 4: Regeneration Gaps: Promises, Problems and Policies in Stem-Cell Research, with Dr. Charles E. “Chuck” Murry
The use of stem cells for research and as a therapy for certain diseases has received a great deal of public attention. Murry, professor of pathology, directs the Center for Cardiovascular Biology and co-directs the UW’s new Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine. His research focuses on stem-cell biology and repair of the injured heart.
- Wednesday, Nov. 1: Aging Well, with Dr. Soo Borson
Getting older doesn’t have to leave you feeling overwhelmed. Aging successfully depends on your attitude and willingness to engage and stay active. Dr. Soo Borson, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, directs the Memory Disorders Clinic at UW Medical Center. She is also a core investigator in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Borson’s clinical interests focus on diagnosis and treatment of dementias. Her research activities focus on improving early diagnosis and comprehensive care.
