PSYCHED UP: The Department of Psychology announced its annual honors. Professor Jaime Diaz was honored by the Graduate Program Action Committee with the Davida Teller Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award for outstanding service to, and excellence in, graduate mentorship and training. Professor Emeritus Fred Fiedler was given the 2006 Walter F. Ulmer, Jr. Applied Research Award. This award is given annually to an individual whose research career exemplifies the Center for Creative Leadership’s (Greensboro, NC) value of integrating science and practice.

Graduate Student Service Award recipients are Heather Knapp (David Corina, advisor); Christopher Jones (Ilene Schwartz and Gene P. Sackett, advisors); Amy Guthormsen (Miriam Bassok, advisor); and David Pantalone (Jane Simoni, advisor). This award honors graduate students, chosen by the Graduate Program Action Committee, who have consistently demonstrated service to the department as a whole and to the graduate student community specifically.

The Department of Psychology Distinguished Teaching Awards for Graduate Students are given for outstanding service and excellence in teaching. The recipients this year are Angela Davis (Stephanie Carlson, advisor), Jenna Jung-Youn Lee (Yuichi Shoda, advisor); and Carissa Leeson (Randy Kyes, advisor )

Cindy Kim and Jennifer Wang are co-winners of the 2006 Edwin R. Guthrie Prize in Psychology. Cindy’s paper, “Girls’ Estradiol Level and Family Relations,” sponsored by Adjunct Research Assistant Professor Sybil Carrere, was chosen as best empirical research paper. Jennifer’s paper, “Utilizing a System Approach toward Cultural Individual Differences Research” sponsored by Associate Professor Yuichi Shoda, was chosen as the best review paper. This award honors meritorious undergraduate students.
