TOURING TROMBONIST: School of Music doctoral trombone student Philip B. Brown is one of four winners of the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle Solo Competition, an annual event for musicians age 20 to 35 who live or study in one of five states in the Northwest. The prestigious award comes with a cash prize of $2,000 and a performing tour of the state of Washington in September for each winner.

Brown will be touring Eastern Washington with soprano Cristina Villareale from Sept. 10–16. The other two winners, pianist Jeffrey Savage and violinist James Garlick, will be touring Western Washington the following week. All of the musicians will present formal concerts, as well as master classes in area schools. The club takes care of all tour expenses.

“It really is a wonderful opportunity, and I am very excited about it,” Brown said. “I am so grateful for my teachers at the UW for all of their help and guidance, and to doctoral piano student Tonya Siderius, who did a superb job accompanying me throughout the competition.”

PICKING PIONEERS: Provost Phyllis Wise will serve as a member of the panel that will interview the finalists for this year’s National Institutes of Health’s Director’s Pioneer Awards. The Pioneer Award program, now in its third year, is designed to support individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering approaches to major contemporary challenges in biomedical research. In her invitation letter, Wise was told, “Because of the nature of the NDPA program and its high visibility, it is essential that the panel members be outstanding, broad-thinking, and innovative scientists — like you — and that they fully represent the diversity of the biomedical research community.” The panel will interview the top 20–25 candidates after a preliminary evaluation, and will recommend to the NIH director which ones should be selected to receive Pioneer Awards.

Afterwards, there will be a culinary tribute to Kafka which may include Kafka Kake, Penal Colony Stew, Starving Artist diet soda and Metamorphosis Pie (subject to change without notice).
