Call it the Brotman Building

The building at 815 Mercer Street has been named the Brotman Building in honor of UW Regent Jeff Brotman and his wife, Susan Brotman. The name, approved by the Board of Regents in May, recognizes the Brotmans’ philanthropic support to advance the South Lake Union biomedical research complex.

The Mercer building is phase I of the biomedical research expansion plan. The building, former home of a natural gas company and known as the Blue Flame building, was renovated last year and now houses labs for the Center for Cardiovascular Biology, led by Charles Murry; the Center for Translational Medicine in Women’s Health, led by Nora Disis; and the Program in Allergy and Inflammation, led by Karol Bomsztyk.

Ground has been broken for phase II of the South Lake Union expansion located on the site of The Brotman Building, the Phase I research building. Phase II comprises two buildings, a research laboratory and an administrative services building. The administrative services building will feature a large auditorium, other seminar spaces, and a café in support of the research initiative. Both buildings are slated for completion in December of 2007 with occupancy by June of 2008.
