School of Pharmacy offers ‘Health Care and the Media: Perceptions, Truth and Possibilities’

A panel of local communications professionals will bring their expertise to the School of Pharmacy’s annual Don Katterman Lecture, set for 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, June 15, in room T-435 of the Health Sciences Center.

Health Care and the Media: Perceptions, Truth and Possibilities is the title, and panelists include Jean Enersen of King 5 TV, Patricia Murphy of the UW’s own KUOW radio, Ian Ith of The Seattle Times and Tina Mankowski, director of Health Sciences/UW Medicine News & Community Relations at the UW.

Belle Taylor-McGhee, executive director of the Pharmacy Access Partnership and a former reporter, will talk about how to communicate with the media and with patients about important issues.

The content will be geared to all health professionals and will include how to talk with patients about issues raised in media reports, what health care messages are likely to be ignored by the media, and how health care professions are shown, or not shown, by the media.

The annual lecture is sponsored by the Pharmacy Alumni Association. The cost is $20 without continuing education credit. To register, send name, mailing address, day phone number and e-mail address, along with a check for $20, to Pharmacy Alumni Association, Box 354699, Seattle 98195.
