UW Community Celebration, Stardust talk among Washington Weekend events

Open houses, demonstrations, tours and art walks, lectures, performancs, sporting events and more await visitors to campus for the second annual Washington Weekend, Thursday, April 27, through Saturday, April 29.


In all, more than 70 events will fill the campus for the three-day celebration, opening the campus to friends, family and neighbors. A number of events require advance registration, so check the schedule and plan ahead. A full schedule of events is available at http://www.washington.edu/alumni/weekend/.


Highlights of the weekend include:


  • The UW Community Celebration, 4-5 p.m. Friday, April 28, in the Meany Hall lobby, will be a chance for faculty, staff and retirees to recognize and thank their colleagues who make the campus run. Advance registration is requested, through, so visit and sign up online at http://www.washington.edu/alumni/weekend/2006community_celebration.html.
  • The next day, Saturday, at the same time 4-5 p.m. in 120 Kane, Donald Brownlee, UW professor of astronomy and principal investigator for the NASA Stardust mission, will discuss the mission in a lecture titled Dust in Time: A Solar System Mystery.
  • UW Health Sciences will hold its annual Open House as part of the weekend. The latest in research and technology in health sciences will be on display Friday and Saturday of the weekend.

  • UW Bothell will celebrate its 15th anniversary on Saturday, April 29, with an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Bothell campus. The event is free and the public is invited. Featured will be food vendors, arts and crafts, live music and a live performance by the UW Bothell Theater Troupe. Academic advisors also will be on hand to talk with prospective students. Other events include tours of the campus, including its award-winning architecture and wetland ecological preserve.


  • Other open houses include those in the College of Engineering, the Department of Earth and Space Sciences, the School of Drama (presenting the rock musical The Who’s Tommy this weekend), the School of Art, the School of Dance, the Department of Anthropology and the UWAA Travel Program.
