‘Asthma Walk 2006’ set for April 30 at Husky Stadium

The American Lung Association will hold its “Asthma Walk 2006” on Sunday, April 30 at Husky Stadium. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

The team from UW Medicine will be led by Dr. Teal Hallstrand, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine; Dr. Jason Debley, assistant professor of pediatrics in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, and Bill Shecket, research study coordinator in the Department of Anesthesiology.

UWMC is a sponsor of the event, a 5K walk that will begin and end in the Northwest Plaza of Husky Stadium.

“Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children,” Hallstrand said. “More than 600,000 people in our state have asthma, including about 150,000 children.”

The Asthma Walk helps fund local researchers studying the causes of asthma, including Hallstrand and Debley. Hallstrand authored a landmark study last year on the relationship between asthma and obesity, and is researching the pathogenesis of exercise-induced asthma.

“The goal this year is to have 1,000 walkers,” Shecket said. “We invite everyone at the UW to join our team or to support us with their contributions.”
