Polish economist to speak on European Union

Henryka Bochniarz, former minister of industry and trade of Poland and currently President of the Polish Confederation of Private Employers (Lewiatan), will speak on The changing European Union: New Challenges and Opportunities, at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 10, in The Forum, 309 Parrington.


Bochniarz, a Polish economist with extensive international experience, is one of the most influential women in Polish business life. She will speak as part of the Dean’s Forum at the Evans School of Public Affairs. Bochniarz will discuss the expansion of the EU with the 2004 accession of Poland and other Central and Eastern European Countries.


A former minister of industry and trade in Poland, she was responsible for restructuring and privatizing 7000 firms. She has a special interest in EU efforts for economic development and environmental protection.


In 2005, Bochniarz was nominated as the first woman candidate for the presidency of Poland. She is a former Fulbright Scholar and worked for nearly two decades as an academic lecturer and researcher at the Foreign Trade Research Institute.


Presently, she is President of the Polish Confederation of Private Employers, Lewiatan, and a member of the Enterprise Policy Group of the European Commission. She helped found Poland’s first Chamber of Commerce.
