School of Music offers variety of concerts

The School of Music is offering its usual potpourri of concerts this week, beginning with a free one. Voice Division students will offer a recital of French art songs by Fauré, Debussy, and others on Monday, Feb. 27. The concert will be in Brechemin Auditorium in the Music Building.


On the same night, the Modern Jazz Contingent, directed by Marc Seales, will offer a concert in Meany Theater. The program features works by Jim Beard, Marc Seales, Joshua Redman, and UW student Jon Armstrong. Seales, professor of jazz piano at the School of Music, will also perform with the group. The Jim Knapp Orchestra, in which School of Music assistant professor of trumpet Vern Sielert performs, will be featured in the second half of the concert.


On Tuesday, Feb. 28, the Percussion Ensemble presents “Meany Vibes.” Guest conductor Jim Campbell, director of percussion studies at the University of Kentucky, will conduct the ensemble on Los Dioses Aztecas and Streams. Father and son composers Gerald and David Kechley will be represented on the program with the elder Kechley’s March Incognito for Percussion and Piano and David’s Dancing for Percussion Ensemble. Seattle Percussive Arts will premiere a new composition by graduate student Katie Hurst, My Broken Music Box, featuring Hurst and Tom Collier, director of percussion studies at the UW School of Music, as marimba soloists. The concert is in Meany Theater.


On Thursday, March 2, student harpists Gabrielle Holmquist, Sariah Khormaee, Juyong Kwon, Ashley Wong, and Jody Wong — all students of Pamela Vokolek — will perform solos, duos, harp ensemble, and chamber music for harp and flute and for harp and violin by J.S.Bach, Paul Hindemith, Camille Saint-Saens, Hendrik Andriessen, Vincent Persichetti, Carlos Salzedo, Lynne Palmer, and Bernard Andres. The concert is in 130 Kane. .


All the concerts are at 7:30 p.m. All but the Voice Division recital, which is free, are $10. Tickets are available at the Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880.
