UW Bothell selects four finalists for campus chancellor

Four finalists have been selected from a field of more than 80 applicants for the chancellorship of  UW Bothell. The chancellor’s position became available when Chancellor Warren Buck returned to the faculty in June 2005 after six years of service to the campus.

The chancellor serves as the UWB chief executive officer and is an active member of the UW leadership team in shaping an evolving three-campus university. Steven G. Olswang has served as interim chancellor of the campus since July 1, 2005.

Finalists for the position are:

  • Shirley Baugher, professor and dean of the College of Human Ecology at the University of Minnesota;
  • Thomas Bellamy, vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Washington Bothell;
  • Gary Moore, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Jacksonville University in Florida; and
  • John Wanat, professor and former provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

The candidates will spend several days meeting with UWB faculty, students, staff, local community college presidents, key UW leaders and members of the community. The first candidate to be at the campus will be Thomas Bellamy, and the public is invited to hear his presentation Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. on the UWB campus. The other candidates will visit in March, with dates and times to be announced. It is expected that the new chancellor will assume duties by about July 1. The search committee is chaired by Mary Baroni, director of UWB’s nursing program and Bruce Bare, dean of the College of Forest Resources at the UW Seattle campus.

“The Chancellor is responsible for overseeing the academic and operational functions of the campus as well as developing, sustaining and enhancing partnerships with other educational insitutions including partner community colleges. The new Chancellor will work with community groups and businesses, and will establish effective working relationships with state legislators and government staff,” said Baroni.

“The UWB Chancellor will foster the academic and professional climate of the campus, and set UWB’s strategic course for successfully addressing the challenges of significant campus growth and tri-campus development.”

“We are looking for a candidate who has successful academic and administrative experience with an earned doctorate and a distinguished record of teaching and research of a full professor. The successful candidate must have the leadership skills and vision to foster continued academic excellence across campus,” added Bare.

Established in 1990 as an upper-division and masters’ level campus, UWB has five academic programs including business, computing and software systems, education, nursing and interdisciplinary arts and sciences led by an outstanding UW faculty engaged in teaching, research and service. The school has over 5,300 alumni and will welcome its first freshman class this fall.

Faculty and students at UWB benefit from the many resources of UW Seattle, while working in a small school enviroment that fosters extraordinary academic experiences.

UWB is co-located with Cascadia Community College and opened at its current location in fall 2000 with state-of-the-art facilities, a wetlands restoration project and forested uplands. UWB employs 97 faculty and 170 staff serving an enrollment of 1,800 students.
