Space Huskies seeking fifth- and sixth-graders who ‘Imagine Mars’
Do your children want to go to Mars? Or maybe design a space colony? If so, they’re just the people the Space Huskies Program is looking for.
Back by popular demand, UW Bothell’s Space Huskies program is holding its second Mars colony design workshops. Students in fifth and sixth grades are encouraged to attend and participate in this free workshop
The workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 25 and March 4 on the UW Bothell campus. Attendees must participate in all three workshops. The students will design their own community on Mars, and their work will be submitted to NASA’s Imagine Mars Program.
Space Huskies is a program developed by UW Bothell students that is focused on promoting K-12 science education.
Kam Yee, project organizer and UWB student intern, says you don’t have to be an expert to participate. “Anybody, from 5 years old to 50 is already an expert on living!” she said. “We can apply what we know about living on Earth to how we will live on Mars.”
UWB Associate Professor Kelvin Sung of computing & software systems, who participated in the Space Huskies program last year with his two daughters, said, “As a direct result from the experience my daughters have become much more interested in science in general and in Mars in particular.”
In addition to the on-campus project, UWB students are working with the entire sixth grade (49 students) at Woodin Elementary School in Woodinville.
“The hands-on experiments really get the kids involved,” said Melodie Wiggin one of the three member team of teachers of the sixth grade class at Woodin Elementary School. “They are focused, engaged and clearly having fun with science. It’s fun to watch!”
Students participating in the Saturday group and the Woodin elementary students will present their projects at a science fair on campus on March 29, which will feature astronaut Clayton C. Anderson as the keynote speaker.
