Three School of Music concerts planned next week
The UW School of Music plans three concerts next week.
School of Music faculty pianist Regina Yeh and Brazilian violinist Cármelo de los Santos, faculty violinist at the University of New Mexico, will team up to play works by Beethoven, Brahms, Ysaÿe, and Ravel at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in Brechemin Auditorium.
De los Santos was the first prizewinner of the IV “Júlio Cardona” International Competition, held in Covilhã, Portugal, in 2003, and also received the special prize for best interpretation of the required Portuguese work. In 2002, de los Santos performed at the prestigious Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall with the ARCO Chamber Orchestra, both as a soloist and as conductor. Yeh is on the keyboard faculty at the UW, where she is frequently featured as a soloist and chamber musician. She has also taught at the Manhattan School of Music and The Brearley School in New York City.
The program includes Beethoven’s Sonata no. 10 in G major, Op. 96, Brahms’ Sonata in D minor, Op. 108, Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata for Violin Solo no.3, Op. 27 (“Ballade”), and Ravel’s Tzigane – Rapsodie de Concert. Tickets are $10 and are available by calling 206-685-8384 or at www.music.washington.edu.
De los Santos will also present a master class at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in Brechemin Auditorium. The class is free and open to the public.
The winners of the School of Music’s November concerto competition will perform with the University Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 in Meany Theater. .
The soloists include Jensina Oliver Byington, piano; Lauren Rustad Roth, violin; Balazs Rozsa, Piano and Gabriel Renteria, oboe. Byington, a student of Craig Sheppard, will play Ravel’s Concerto in G major, mvt. 1. Rustad, who studies with Ronald Patterson, will play Ravel’s Tzigane Rapsodie de Concert. Rozsa, another Sheppard student, will perform Strauss’ Burlesque for Piano and Orchestra in D minor; while Renteria, who studies with Nathan Hughes, will play Mozart’s Concerto in C major, K314, vt.1.

UW voice students will mark the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with A Mozart Celebration!, a performance of songs, arias, duets and trios from five of Mozart’s operas as well as songs by Franz Xaver Mozart, one of his sons. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in the School of Music’s Brechemin Auditorium.
