UW taking part in collaboration with India

The UW is one of 20 American universities taking part in a new Indo-US Inter-University Collaborative Initiative in Higher Education and Research

The initiative was launched today by the President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam. Mata Amritanandamayi Center’s Amrita University will be the focal point for the Indian collaboration.

In addition to the universities, three corporations, Microsoft, Qualcomm and Cadence, will be involved in the collaboration.

The program holds great promise for taking advantage of the tremendous synergy between the United States and India, Kalam said, making it possible for U.S. universities to permit their faculty to teach and guide research at hundreds of colleges and universities in India via AMRITA’s e-learning system and India’s exclusive educational satellite, “EDUSAT”. The program will include advanced technology areas such as engineering and computer science, information technology, materials science, bio- and nanotechnology, health sciences, management sciences, media and other areas. The program will also introduce U.S. faculty to potential research partnerships in India.

Susan E. Jeffords, vice provost for global affairs, represented the UW at the announcement.
