Alvord wins lifetime achievement award from National MS Society
Dr. Ellsworth (Buster) Alvord, professor emeritus of pathology, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at its annual conference in mid-November.
Alvord, who is also a research affiliate in the Center on Human Development and Disability, served as chief of neuropathology at the UW School of Medicine from 1960 to 2002.
His research focuses on the pathology of specific neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and recurring brain tumors.
Alvord has dedicated more than 50 years to people affected by MS, advocating relentlessly for client services when there were no treatments and little hope.
He is a co-founder of the Greater Washington Chapter of the National MS Society.
As a physician, mentor and friend, he has encouraged three generations of his family to contribute approximately $150,000 a year to the society.
He and his wife, Nancy Delaney Alvord, are recognized as being among the Northwest’s most generous supporters of educational, arts, and public service groups.
