New speech pathology degree announced

The UW announced last week that starting fall 2006, it will offer a new Master of Science in Medical Speech-Language Pathology degree. Created to meet the growing industry demand, this program specifically prepares students to work as speech-language pathologists in medical settings and is offered by the University’s Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, which is currently ranked number 3 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

“What distinguishes the master’s in Medical Speech-Language Pathology from other speech-language pathology programs is the clinical fellowship year which provides a bridge from academic training to the full demands of day-to-day practice,” said Margaret Rogers, Medical Speech-Language Pathology Program director.

The master’s in Medical Speech-Language Pathology will meet the new standards for accreditation set by the American Speech and Hearing Association, and upon completion of the program, graduates will receive the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from ASHA.
