Gallucci named to head Center for Quantitative Science

Vince Gallucci, whose work includes developing mathematical and statistical models to link biological studies to future population changes and management options, has been named director of the UW’s Center for Center for Quantitative Science in Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife.

The center, an interdisciplinary academic unit founded in 1987, provides instruction in mathematical and applied statistical methods for undergraduate students in the biological sciences, renewable resources management and environmental studies.

Work covered in courses includes how to estimate the productive potential of fish stocks, design wildlife investigations for impact assessment and management purposes, design and interpret forest production surveys, and utilize statistical methods to investigate biological and ecological problems.

Although administered by the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences in the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences and the College of Forest Resources, Gallucci says the center has increasingly broadened its scope to other biological sciences, a trend he says he intends to continue.

Gallucci holds the Wakefield Professor of Ocean and Fishery Sciences, and is a professor of aquatic and fishery sciences and adjunct professor of marine affairs and international studies.
