Dr. Gavin Britz, assistant professor of neurological surgery based at Harborview Medical Center, has received the Young Clinician Investigator Award for 2005 from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. The award, which includes support for research projects, is given to one full-time faculty member in the early years of his or her career. Britz specializes in treating blood vessel disorders in the brain, including cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. He is also conducting basic and epidemiological research on these conditions. He came to the UW as a neurosurgery resident after earning his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He also did UW fellowships in neuroradiology and interventional radiology before joining the faculty in 2002.

Dean of Nursing Nancy Woods received an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on May 16 and delivered the commencement address for Penn’s School of Nursing. She was honored for her pioneering contributions to health care for women and to nursing education.

The eight-minute film “Back to the Bedside,” about the UW School of Medicine’s Colleges Program, has received a Telly Finalist Award. The producer is Michelle Mansfield, and the executive producers are Julie Calcavecchia and Marjorie Wenrich. The film describes the new curriculum approach which divides incoming students into five colleage groups and gives them consistent mentoring, faculty support and clinical experience, beginning in the first year. The film is included with three of the Mini-Medical School programs now streaming on the UWTV Web site, http://www.uwtv.org (see item below).

UWTV will begin broadcasting programs from the UW Medicine Mini-Medical School, held this February and March, on June 6. Five program segments are ready for broadcast and can also be viewed as streaming video: two segments on the basics of medical school; two segments on teaching safe practices and communicating about errors; and one segment on relieving pain.
