After-hours security changes coming for Health Sciences Building

A number of changes to after-hours access in the Health Sciences Building are slated for late June and July, all related to overall security improvements in the building.

None of the changes will affect use of the building entrances during regular building hours from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, building access and access from one section of the building to another will change after regular hours, on weekends and on holidays.

Beginning June 20, the current after-hours entrance for the Health Sciences Library on the second floor of the E-wing courtyard will be closed at 7 p.m., along with the rest of the regular building entrances. The only after-hours entrance for people without proximity-reader cards will be through the T-wing courtyard entrance.

At the same time, corridors connecting to the main Health Sciences Library entrance on the third floor will be closed off after hours. Unless people have proximity-reader cards and badges for after-hours access, they will not be able to get into the rest of the building from the library. People who now have access cards for exterior doors will be able to use those cards in the corridors.

Departments may need to request access cards for faculty, staff or students who are authorized to be in the building after regular hours. There is a $10 fee for each request. Access card request forms are available at http://depts.washington.edu/hsasf/building/index.html

In July, new secure doors between UW Medical Center and the rest of the building will be locked after regular building hours. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., it will not be possible to move from the medical center into the health sciences areas, although it will be possible to move from health sciences areas into the medical center. The doors will also be locked on weekends and holidays.

These new access-control doors are located on the first through fifth floors. On the second, fourth and fifth floors, they are between the BB and AA wings. On the third floor, the door is between the AA and A/B wings; on the first floor, it is between the AA and B wings.

For after-hours access from UW Medical Center to the rest of the building, some faculty, staff and students may need to get proximity-access cards, using the Web address above. All access requests must come from Health Sciences departments. People with current cards that provide access to exterior doors should be able to use those cards for the new interior doors.

Jack Klebeck, assistant director of health sciences academic services and facilities, said that all of these access changes are part of a long-term plan to improve security in the building by establishing better control of after-hours access. He will be glad to talk with people who have questions about the changes, and can be reached at 616-1777 or by e-mail at klebeck@u.washington.edu.
