MEMORIALIZED: If you’re on Red Square on Wednesday, May 25, you’ll have a chance to observe Memorial Day a few days early. The three ROTC units on campus will host the Joint Service Review Ceremony and Memorial Day Observance at 4:15 p.m. The ceremony is sponsored by the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) units to honor those who have served and sacrificed for their country and to recognize outstanding cadets and midshipmen. This year’s guest speaker is Colonel Steve Townsend, commander of the Arrowhead Brigade, the Army’s first Stryker Brigade Combat Team based out of Fort Lewis.


BIG BOOK: Drama Professor Barry Witham’s book, The Federal Theatre Project: A Case Study, has been selected as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice magazine on behalf of the American Library Association.


STAR MENTOR: Richard Ladner, professor of computer science and engineering, was one of nine individuals and five institutions named by the White House to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. This award recognizes individuals and organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to mentoring students and increasing the participation of minorities, women and disabled students in science, mathematics and engineering. The annual award, administered by the National Science Foundation, includes a $10,000 grant for continued mentoring work and a Presidential commemorative certificate.


HE’S A CITE: Adrian Raftery, professor of statistics and sociology and director of the Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences, was the most cited researcher in mathematics in the world during the decade 1995–2005, according to the Institute for Scientific Information (see http://www.in-cites.com/top/2005/first05-math.html). This includes mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and biostatistics.


DISTINGUISHED COMMUNICATOR: The Department of Communication has named Assunta Ng (MA ’79 Speech Communication) its Distinguished Alumna for 2005. The Department is honoring Ng for her many contributions to the community, including her work as the founder and publisher of the Chinese Post and the Northwest Asian Weekly and for her extensive service to the community. The Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation, which she founded, supports programs to benefit youth of Asian and other minority backgrounds.


COVER CHEF: Scarcely a month after he graced the cover of Food Management magazine, UW chef Jean-Michel Boulot is on another cover — this time Chef magazine. Boulot is featured in an article in the April edition outlining the changes at UW residence hall food services.
