One-man play at UW Tacoma addresses growing up in a multi-ethnic family
Carlos Cortés, a nationally respected author and professor, will present a free one-man play about growing up as a person of mixed ancestry at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at the Washington State History Museum, across the street from the UW Tacoma campus. The play is titled A Conversation With Alana: One Boy’s Multicultural Rite of Passage.
Cortés, a professor emeritus of history at the University of California, Riverside, has lectured widely worldwide on the implications for diversity in education, government and business. He has written television and film documentaries and a book titled The Making and Remaking of a Multiculturalist. He also is a consultant to the Dora the Explorer series for Nickelodeon Television.
The play will be the last part of a two-day event that also will include lectures and workshops and a meeting for community and UW Tacoma leaders at 3 p.m. Monday, May 16, at St. John Baptist Church, 2001 South J St., in Tacoma. The UWT Education Program and the Center for the Study of Education and Poverty are sponsoring Cortés’ visit to UWT as a welcome to UW Tacoma’s new chancellor, Patricia Spakes.
