King and Henikoff elected to National Academy of Sciences

The National Academy of Sciences announced Tuesday the election of Seattle researchers Dr. Mary-Claire King and Dr. Steven Henikoff as new members, in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements King is the American Cancer Society research professor in the departments of medicine and genome sciences at the UW and holds an affiliate membership in the clinical research division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her primary areas of research interest are breast and ovarian cancer, inherited deafness and systemic lupus erythematosus. Her lab also applies genomic sequencing to the identification of victims of human rights abuses.

Henikoff is a member of the basic sciences division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, an affiliate professor in genome sciences at the UW and an investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The election, which is by the current members, was held during the business session of the 142nd annual meeting of the Academy. Election to membership is in the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded to a U.S. scientist. The 72 new members bring the total number of active members to 1,976.
