Injury prevention and injury outcomes will be the main topics for a short course, Injury Research Methods (EPI590TJ), to be held July 11 to 15 at the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center, 401 Broadway. The course, jointly sponsored by the center and the UW medical and public health schools, will help participants develop a research question and proposal. Other topics include study designs, the human subjects approval process and searching injury research literature. Cancer and Culture, a public forum focusing on cancers uniquely dangerous to minority communities, will be held from 7 to 8:30 p..m., Tuesday, May 10, at Town Hall Seattle, 119 8th Ave. Researchers from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s Public Health Sciences Division will speak on topics related to breast cancer outcomes, prostate cancer survival and effective health screening. Verna Cain, nurse manager of the outpatient burn clinic at Harborview Medical Center, will receive the Curtis Artz Award from the American Burn Association this month for her contributions and achievements in burn care. The award is the highest honor given by the group to a non-physician. She is a 30-year employee at Harborview.


Dr. Maynard Olson is acting head of the Division of Medical Genetics in the Department of Medicine. Dr. George Stamatoyannopoulos, who holds the Arno Motulsky Endowed Professorship, stepped down as division head in March. Olson is professor of medicine in the division, professor of genome sciences, director of the UW Genome Center and holds an adjunct appointment in computer science and engineering.
