McNair Program students and others to hold annual conference in HUB

The UW Office of Minority Affairs’ Ronald E McNair Program/ Early Identification Program and the Graduate School’s Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program will hold their 13th annual spring research conference Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7, in the HUB.

The title of the conferencer will be “Insight, Inquiry, & Impact: (Di)Versifying the Culture of Research.”

Each year since 1993, EIP/McNair and the Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program (GO-MAP) have hosted a conference where students, faculty, and staff convene to share ideas and build collegial relationships. The conference is staged as a professional meeting that allows EIP/McNair Presidential Scholars, Sophomore Seminar students, and other program participants to present the findings of the original research they have conducted throughout the year.

It also represents an opportunity for others to be exposed to the scholarly work of fellow students, and make a contribution to the scholarly and intellectual atmosphere of the University.

The Early Identification Program for Graduate and Professional Studies (EIP) was established in 1985 with the goal of increasing the number of minority scholars and researchers who will find faculty positions in higher education, practice in the professions, and carry out advanced research in the coming years.

The McNair Post baccalaureate Achievement Program is designed to provide low-income, first-generation students and underrepresented students with effective preparation for doctoral study. One of the unique features of the McNair Scholars Program is the opportunity for students to carry out research projects in collaboration with a faculty mentor in their field of study.

The EIP/McNair programs are now accepting applications for the McNair, Presidential and Boeing Scholarships. Anyone interested in applying should look at the Web page, http://depts.washington.edu/uwmcnair/index.htm.
