Community design and your life

The School of Nursing will present a free, public lecture about community design and public health at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, in room 130 of Kane Hall on campus.

The places we live, work and play and how we travel among them affect the character of our communities, our time with family and friends, and above all, our health. What kind of choices are we making when it comes to designing our public transportation, neighborhoods, sidewalks and street lights? How does community design affect the health of children, working adults and elders?

The title for the 26th Annual Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Lecture is “Healthy Community Design Across the Lifespan: What We Build, How We Travel, and How We Feel.”

The speaker is Dr. Howard Frumkin, professor and chair of environmental and occupational health in Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. He is the author of Urban Sprawl and Public Health: Designing, Planning and Building for Healthy Communities.

An internist, environmental and occupational medicine specialist, and  epidemiologist, Frumkin currently directs the Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, based at Emory in Atlanta. Additional book credits include the forthcoming Environmental Health: From Local to Global and Safe and Healthy School Environments.

The 2005 Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Lecture is supported by the Dr. Leo John Rosellini Endowment.
