UW Medicine sponsoring ‘Go Red for Women’ Luncheon

UW Medicine is sponsoring the “Go Red for Women” luncheon on Monday, Feb. 28, at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel, one of several events planned in February to raise awareness of how heart disease affects women’s lives. The American Heart Association, working with local organizations, spearheads the national effort.

Dr. April Stempien-Otero, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology, will be the featured speaker at the luncheon event. Attendees will learn more about cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and about how they can protect their health and that of their families.

Gretchen Bakamis, marketing director for UW Medicine, noted that the “Go Red for Women” events in February offer a great opportunity for women to learn about heart disease and stroke. “It’s very important that women learn about their health risks, and learn that the warning signs for heart attacks can be different in women. We want to promote more education, so this is a campaign we want to support,” she said.

Other events during the month of February include lighting the Space Needle in red on Feb. 3, a free Kick-Off Event the morning of Friday, Feb. 4, at the downtown Bon-Macy’s, and the 2005 Heart Ball on Feb. 5 at the Grand Hyatt. UW Medicine will be offering risk assessments for heart disease and stroke at the Kick-Off Event.
