Measuring quality in surgery

Dr. Barbara Bass, professor of surgery at the University of Maryland and a recognized expert in measuring surgical outcomes, will give the annual Helen and John Schilling Endowed Lecture for the Department of Surgery.

Bass will speak on “The Measurement of Quality in Surgery: The State of This Rudimentary Art” at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 21, in Hogness Auditorium at the Health Sciences Center. The lecture is open to the UW community.

She earned an M.D. from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and was then a resident in general surgery at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. As a fellow in gastrointestinal physiology at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, she was also on active duty as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. She joined the University of Maryland in 1994 as professor and director of surgery at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. Since 1999 has been associate chair for academic affairs and research.
