Mary-Claire King receives award in Philadelphia
Dr. Mary-Claire King will receive the 2004 Marion Spencer Fay Award from the Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership of Drexel University’s College of Medicine, in Philadelphia, today (Dec. 2).
The award recognizes a woman research scientist or physician who has made an exceptionally significant contribution to health care and carries a $10,000 grant to support the recipient’s work. It is named for Marion Spencer Fay (1896-1990), who was a professor of physiological chemistry and president of the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania.
King, who joined the UW faculty in 1995, is the American Cancer Society professor of medicine (medical genetics) and of genome sciences. She also received the 2004 Genetics Prize of the Peter Gruber Foundation this fall at the annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics in Toronto.
She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has served on the President’s Cancer Panel and the Committee on the Use of DNA in Forensics of the National Academy of Sciences, and she was director of the Molecular Genetics Identification Laboratory for the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal, among many other responsibilities.
Her laboratory investigates the genetics of complex, common human conditions, including breast and ovarian cancer, inherited deafness, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
