New sculpture comes to UW campus

The UW’s newest sculpture, The Department of Forensic Morphology Annex, will be dedicated at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21.

The sculpture, by Cris Bruch, a local artist with a history of experimentation and innovation, was installed recently (see photo) on its Parrington Lawn site, just south of the new law school building.

An enormous and complex construction of stainless steel pipe and sheet metal, the sculpture is meant to reference two historic campus structures, Bruch says — the Aerodynamics Lab Building (the site of the original Boeing wind tunnel near the Husky Union Building) and even more directly, the UW Theodor Jacobsen Observatory (near the campus entrance at NE 45th Street and 17th Avenue NE).

Built by local sculpture fabricators, Fabrication Specialties Inc., the sculpture was commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission Art in Public Places Program using one-half-percent-for-art funds generated by a variety of campus construction projects. The scupture was financed by the state’s half-percent for art program.

Following the dedication an informal reception honoring Bruch will be held in the Henry Art Gallery café. The events are free and open to the public.
