Norris named vice dean for academic affairs

Dr. Tom Norris, associate dean of the School of Medicine and executive director of UW Physicians Network, the neighborhood clinics, has been named vice dean for academic affairs, effective June 1.

He replaces Dan Hunt, associate dean for academic affairs since 1987, who is leaving this month to become dean of the Thunder Bay campus of the newly created Northern Ontario Medical School.

Norris, also a professor of family medicine and adjunct professor of medicine, health services, medical education and biomedical informatics, will remain as head of UW Physicians Network while the network’s board finds a successor. He will also continue to lead Continuing Medical Education and Telehealth Services in the medical school.

Other titles of School of Medicine leadership positions will also change to recognize the responsibilities they entail, and to be consistent with those at other medical schools.

Dr. Carol MacLaren, assistant dean for student affairs, will become associate dean and chief administrative officer for academic affairs. Dr. Susan Marshall, assistant dean for curriculum, and Dr. David Acosta, assistant dean for multicultural affairs, will become associate deans.

Several other associate deans will become vice deans, including Ruth Mahan, vice dean for finance and administration; Dr. Andy Ziskind, vice dean for clinical affairs; Dr. Albert Berger, vice dean for research and graduate education; and Dr. John Coombs, vice dean for regional affairs and graduate medical education.
