Donated Native American-inspired art to be featured in Burke auction

The UW’s Burke Museum will auction off more than 200 Native American-inspired works of art donated by about 70 artists in its Contemporary Northwest Coast Art Auction, 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 23.

Proceeds of the sale will benefit the Burke’s recently created Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Art.

The largest auction of this kind of art ever presented by the Burke, this fund-raising event will feature art donated by about 70 Northwest artists, including Bill Holm, Hyacinth Joe David, Steve Brown, David Boxley and Susan Point. Many of the donating artists will be attending the auction.

All funds raised by the Bill Holm Auction will support the numerous research projects being conducted by the Bill Holm Center, at the Burke Museum. The Mission of the Bill Holm Center is to establish a globally accessible learning center at the museum to promote scholarly research on Northwest Coast Native art, increase Native and public access to research resources, and foster appreciation and understanding of Northwest Coast Native art.

The Burke will close its café, first-level gallery and the parking lot in the immediate lot near the museum on Sunday to accommodate auction guests. Access to the parking lot also will be limited on Saturday, though the museum will be open for business.
