Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute today

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15, in the Health Sciences Center Lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.. This year’s theme is “Educating the Next Generation: The Dream Continues.”

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Alonzo Plough, director of the Department of Public Health – Seattle & King County, and associate professor in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

UW President Lee Huntsman will present U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott with the 2004 Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Distinguished Service Award for community service and volunteerism.

Dr. Nanci Murphy, associate dean of the School of Pharmacy, will serve as master of ceremonies. Entertainment will be provded by the Eckstein Middle School Senior Jazz Band, Capoeira Angola, Seattle Parks & Recreation Arts Corps, and Bailadores de Bronce, Mexican folkloric dance group.

Community Service Awards will be presented to individuals or groups from the six Health Sciences schools and UW Medical Center by Polly Olsen of the School of Medicine’s Native American Center of Excellence.

At Harborview Medical Center, the annual Martin Luther King celebration was held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, in the medical center cafeteria, with King County Executive Ron Sims and Harborview Visiting Committee Member Louise McKinney as the featured speakers.
