Retired Navy captain named to lead Department of Endodontics

Dr. James D. Johnson, retired U.S. Navy captain, has begun work as chair of the School of Dentistry’s Department of Endodontics and program director for the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics.

“The University’s endodontic program has a long and brilliant history. The names of John Ingle, Eugene Natkin, and Gerald Harrington are legends in endodontics. I want to build on the tradition that these leaders have established,” Johnson said. “I am looking forward to working with a great faculty and staff in the endodontics department and throughout the School of Dentistry under the leadership of the dean, Dr. Martha Somerman.”

Johnson attended the University of Colorado as an undergraduate and received his D.D.S. degree from Northwestern University Dental School. Upon graduation he was commissioned as a dental officer in the U.S. Air Force, serving at several Air Force bases including Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam, and the U.S. Air Force Dispensary at Ent Air Force Base, Colo. He went into private practice in Colorado before returning to Northwestern University Dental School to earn a certificate in endodontics and an M.S. degree in 1985.

Johnson was chairman of the endodontics department of the Naval Postgraduate Dental School and director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School from 1997 to 2001.

Johnson is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and a member of several dental professional organizations.
