Community gears up for celebration and dedication of UW’s new Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering
WHAT:
Dedication and open house for the new $72 million Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering.
WHO:
Philanthropist Paul G. Allen, lead donor for the new center, and other speakers including Gov. Gary Locke, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and UW Dean of Engineering Denice Denton.
WHEN:
Thursday, Oct. 9, 1:30 p.m. for the dedication. The open house is from 2 to 4 p.m.
WHERE:
The Allen Center, located on Stevens Way just east of Rainier Vista, on the Seattle campus.
DETAILS:
Faculty, staff and students at the UW and business and community leaders from around the region will gather to celebrate the dedication of the new Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering. The dedication ceremony will be followed by an open house with tours of the new facility. Robot dogs that play soccer, a motion-capture laboratory and other high-tech demonstrations will be on hand. The building, constructed with a maximum of lab space, emphasizes hands-on learning that allows students to gain knowledge by participating in science rather than just hearing about it. Funded mostly by private donations – more than 250 individuals and corporations gave a total of $42 million – the Allen Center represents a community partnership that underlines the importance of maintaining the UW as an internationally-known center for high-tech research and teaching.
The campaign for the building was led by Tom Alberg of Madrona Venture Group; Jeremy Jaech, a CSE alumnus and co-founder of Aldus and Visio corporations; and Ed Lazowska, Bill & Melinda Gates Chair in Computer Science at the UW. LMN Architects of Seattle designed the center and M.A. Mortenson Co. was the general contractor.
