Surgery Pavilion on schedule to open in October

Members of the UW community and the neighborhoods around the University will be able to tour UW Medical Center’s new Surgery Pavilion at open houses on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20.

The Pavilion will be open from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication planned.

One of several ceramic sculptures by Jun Kaneko that were installed at the site during the past week. Kaneko calls the sculptures “dangos,” a word that means “dumplings” in Japanese, according to the artist.

The Saturday morning open house will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., just prior to the UW-Idaho football game in Husky Stadium.

The new building features family-size consultation rooms, 11 operating rooms, several clinics and treatment areas, a comfortable waiting area for families and friends, lobbies with Internet capability, and a parking garage underneath the building.

A glass-enclosed skybridge links the Pavilion to the east side of UWMC on floors two and three.

The units that will occupy the Surgery Pavilion are Urology Clinic, Prostate Center, surgery check-in (morning admission and ambulatory), operating rooms for ambulatory surgery, pre-and-post surgery holding and observation, Pre-Surgery Clinic, Surgical Specialties Center, Imaging, and Digestive Diseases Center.

The Pavilion will be opened to patients in phases during October. The Urology Clinic and Prostate Center on the first floor will open Oct. 7, to be followed by the second and third floors later in the month.

All three floors are now substantially complete, as construction workers finish detail work and the installation of equipment continues.

Landscaping and artwork installation are also in progress around the building.
