Vice Provost Severson to speak

Dr. James Severson, who became the UW’s vice provost for intellectual property and technology transfer in January, will be the featured speaker for the final program this academic year in the series “Things Your Mother Never Taught You.” The series is sponsored by the School of Medicine’s Industry Relations Office and is open to everyone. Dr. Susan Wray, director of industry relations, will also speak.

Severson and Wray will talk about “Commercialization of Discoveries Made at the UW” at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, in room T-435 of the Health Sciences Center.

Severson will describe plans for the UW Office of Technology Licensing and the Office of Software and Copyright Ventures, units in his area. Before he joined the UW, he was president of the Cornell Research Foundation, responsible for technology transfer from Cornell’s Ithaca, N.Y., campus and the Weill Medical College of Cornell in New York City. Before Cornell, he was director of health technologies in the Office of Patents and Technology Marketing at the University of Minnesota. He has been president of the Association of University Technology Managers, and holds a Ph.D. in physiology from Iowa State University.

The Office of Industry Relations plans to continue the series of presentations next fall, with the first seminar scheduled for Sept. 3.
