Cosmetic surgery
UW Medical Center’s Cosmetic Surgery Center is presenting an informal seminar, “Recent Advances in Facial Cosmetic Surgery,” from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, June 5, at its UWMC-Roosevelt location. Dr. Sam Most, chief of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, will speak and answer questions. The presentation is free and open to everyone.


Faculty workshop
“Identifying and Measuring Professional Behaviors in Students and Residents” is the title for a faculty development workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, June 10, in room 316 of South Campus Center. Dr. David Stern from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is the principal faculty member. The Department of Medical Education is the sponsor and the workshop is open to all medicine and health sciences faculty. There is no charge but registration is required in advance. Pellegrini on ABS board
Dr. Carlos Pellegrini, professor and chair of surgery and holder of the Henry N. Harkins Endowed Chair in Surgery, has been named to the Board of Directors of the American Board of Surgery. The American Board of Surgery is an independent, non-profit organization and one of the 24 certifying boards that are members of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Harborview Medical Center Surgeon-in-Chief Ronald Maier, professor of surgery, is vice chair of the American Board of Surgery and will become chair in June 2003.


Deem nets $500,000 award
Dr. Steven Deem, associate professor of anesthesiology, has received the Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award from the International Anesthesia Research Society, worth $500,000, for his research “Hemoglobin, Nitric Oxide and the Pulmonary Circulation.” He is the fifth recipient of the award, created to encourage innovation and creativity by an individual scientist and presented every other year. It is paid in three annual installments to support the research work.


Professor Kiviat honored
Dr. Nancy Kiviat, professor of pathology and chief of pathology at Harborview Medical Center, will receive one of three Phenomenal Women Awards on Friday, May 30, from the Women’s Endowment Foundation, a Seattle Jewish philanthropic organization. The other honorees are entrepreneur Sally Narodick and Judge Barbara Rothstein.


Sullivan becomes president
Dr. Sean Sullivan, director of the UW Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research and Policy Program in the School of Pharmacy and professor of pharmacy and health services, took office May 20 as president of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research. The group held its eighth annual session in Arlington, Va.


Ogata honored by dietitians
Beth Ogata, a nutritionist at the Center on Human Development and Disability and a clinical dietitian at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, is one of two registered dietitians to be honored as Washington State Recognized Young Dietitians of the Year. She is also chair of the Washington State Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group.
