Dr. Eric B. Larson, professor of medicine and former UW Medical Center medical director, was selected chair-elect of the American College of Physicians (ACP) Board of Regents. Larson, who is also director of the Center for Health Studies at Group Health Cooperative in Seattle, began his term during the ACP annual meeting April 3-5 in San Diego. He will become chair of the Board of Regents in April 2004 and serve a one-year term. ACP, founded in 1915, is the second-largest physician group in the United States, with more than 115,000 internists, medical residents, fellows and students. The ACP Board of Regents is the main policy-making body of the organization. Larson has been a member of the ACP board since 1998 and was re-elected in 2001. He was medical director at UW Medical Center for 13 years.


Dr. Yongmin Kim, professor and chair of bioengineering and professor of electrical engineering, has been named the 2003 Laureate of the Ho-Am Prize in Engineering. He is receiving this award for his outstanding achievements in high performance computer architecture and medical imaging. Kim came to the UW from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. He founded the UW Image Computing Systems Laboratory, which focuses on hardware and software innovations in multimedia, image processing, computer graphics, medical imaging, and advanced workstation design. The Ho-Am prize honors the late Byung-Chull Lee, also know as Ho-Am, who was founder and chairman of the Samsung Group. Kim will accept the award, which consists of a gold medal, plaque and cash prize, June 3 at the Ho-Am Art Hall in Korea.
